Student grant programs are similar to scholarships in that they are free financial aid that students are not required to repay. Federal and state governments commonly fund student grants, which are typically based on things like economic need, ability to pay, student status and academic requirements. Students are required every academic year to complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility for any type of federal grant.

Types of student grants:

Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is the basic grant available to undergraduate students who have demonstrated an exceptional financial need on the FAFSA and have not earned a bachelor or professional degree or Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used. Students can receive the Federal Pell Grant for no more than 12 terms or the equivalent (roughly six years). You’ll receive a notice if you’re getting close to your limit.

  • To determine how much Pell that has been used and what is remaining, login to your account at www.studentaid.gov/fsa-id/sign-in using your FSA ID (used to log into the U.S. Department of Education online systems) to view your lifetime eligibility used.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The FSEOG Grant is intended to supplement other aid. This grant is federally funded with each school receiving a fixed amount each year. Funds are awarded to a limited number of undergraduate students with preference being given to Pell Grant recipients demonstrating exceptional financial need.
