Science and Health clubs learn about genetic testing
The Science Club and the Health and Nutrition Club at UA-PTC had a joint launch Nov. 14.
Students heard a guest speaker, Quinn Hurshman, of Invitae labs, speak about the science of genetic testing, particularly in cancer, and careers in genetic counseling. Genetic counseling is a growing field of clinical practice in which counselors assist in developing appropriate genetic testing, and interpreting the results. The field requires a master's degree in genetic counseling, and UAMS has a program locally. Many of the prerequisite courses are available right here at UA-PTC.
Advisors for the Health and Nutrition Club are Jamie Ryan and Shannon Wilcox.
Dr. Moluwa Matute and Dr. George Lauster are advisors for the Science Club.
