Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week cultivates library love

September 16, 2024

Celebrate the freedom to read for Banned Books Week Sept. 22 - 28 at the UA-PTC Ottenheimer Libraries! Have your "mug shot" taken with a banned book, then enjoy -or participate- in banned book "read-alouds" at Main or Little Rock - South campuses.

Monday, Sept. 23

  • Banned Books Read-Alouds, CHARTS Theater, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Mug Shots at Main Campus Library, 9 – 11 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 25

  • Mug Shots at Little Rock - South Library, 9 – 11 a.m.
  • Banned Books Read-Alouds, Little Rock – South Crain Room, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, bookstores, and schools. Typically held during the last week of September, the annual event highlights the value of free and open access to information and brings together the entire book community — librarians, educators, authors, publishers, booksellers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas.

September is library card month!

Visit the North Little Rock Public Library Rover Bookmobile to sign up to get a NLR Public Library Card on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m. - noon next to the Ottenheimer Library on Main Campus. Your library card is a ticket for access to a vast variety of different resources!

Sign up- it’s free and easy. You just need a government issue ID that provides proof of residency in North Little Rock or elsewhere in Pulaski County. If you work or go to school in NLR but did not reside in Pulaski county you can still get a card with NLR you just have to present proof such as a school or work badge.

Libraries offer books, of course, but that’s only the beginning of the great resources libraries provide, like:

  • Magazines and newspapers
  • E-books, audio books, and movies
  • CDs and  DVDs
  • Music to stream or download
  • WiFi and WiFi Hot Spots
  • Computer and internet access
  • In-person and online programming for school, work, or fun
  • Research materials and databases
  • Expert reading recommendations
  • Museum and zoo passes
  • And much more!
