Surgical Tech Program celebrates Surgical Tech Week, Sept. 20-26

September 21, 2020

Join the UA-PTC Surgical Technology Program in celebrating Surgical Tech Week, Sept. 20-26, at an open house event on Thursday, Sept. 24, noon - 3 p.m., in AHEC room 123 at the Main Campus.

About Surgical Technicians

Surgical Technicians are responsible for properly setting up the operating room, arranging necessary equipment, and even assisting physicians during surgery. A surgical technologist may also be known as a scrub, scrub tech, surgical technician, or operating room technician.

There are many reasons why becoming a surgical technologist is a great career choice:

  • Quick entry into the field. The program is only 2 semesters in length after completion of all pre-requisites. The program consists of 31 credit hours with 39 pre-requisite hours giving a total of 70 hours total. After successful completion of all, candidates are allowed to sit for the National Board examination for Surgical Technologists.
  • Employment opportunities exist throughout the US.
  • You won’t get bored! Being a surgical technologist will definitely keep you on your feet, because every day is a new challenge. You will experience new things even for those who specialize in assisting for a specific type of surgery. Each patient is unique in his/her own way.
  • You will make a difference every day. Surgical technology comes with a high level of satisfaction and great meaning. Seeing the results of your work and the lives that you affect are very rewarding and can make a world of difference when you clock in to work daily.

“People outside of the medical professions may not realize what a vital role surgical techs play,” said UA-PTC Surgical Technology Program Director Mashauna Conley. “UA-PTC is educating the professional support staff that the doctors and nurses depend upon to be able to do their jobs. We’re training team players!”

Employment of surgical technologists is projected to grow at least 7 percent from through 2029, which is much faster that the average for all occupations. The median annual wage for surgical technologists is around $41,510 per year. The starting salary is approximately $19.95 per hour.

Surgical Technologists keep the operating room running smoothly. Surgical technology week is the opportunity to educate and promote the profession and to show appreciation for the professionals that have been a great asset to the profession.
