Big Rock on the Map Series presents TIGER
The University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College’s Big Rock on the Map series presents TIGER, a solo performance of video, sound, and storytelling by Deke Weaver at 12:15 p.m. Monday, Oct.14 in the Black Box Theatre at the Center for Humanities and Arts (CHARTS). The performance is free and open to the public.
TIGER is the fifth part of Weaver’s life-long project, The Unreliable Bestiary: a performance for every letter of the alphabet—each letter representing an endangered animal or habitat.
Deke Weaver is an artist and professor at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He will be presenting TIGER, a solo performance of video, sound, and storytelling that is a travelogue, ’70’s slide show, sing-along, séance, and TEDtalk/Parisian salon all at once. Weaver is touring TIGER along the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries, mirroring the movement of India’s Ganges, one of the last homes of wild tigers. TIGER is the fifth part of Weaver’s life-long project, The Unreliable Bestiary: a performance for every letter of the alphabet—each letter representing an endangered animal or habitat. “In this embattled political moment talking with each other face to face feels important. Part of what I hope to do with TIGER is tell some stories, maybe eat a little something, and talk - creating a space to bring together artists and neighbors, a platform for reimagining our present and making the future.”
Deke Weaver’s work has been presented by PBS, the Sundance Film Festival, Channel 4/U.K., the New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center, the Chicago Humanities Festival, the Berlin Video Festival, The Moth, and many others including livestock pavilions, backyard sheds, night clubs and living rooms. A Guggenheim Fellow and Creative Capital grantee, Weaver is an associate professor at the School of Art & Design, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
