The Weight of Manhood: Meikel Church's "Hospital Walls" at Windgate Gallery
The Windgate Gallery at UA - Pulaski Tech presents Hospital Walls, a mixed-media collage exhibition by artist Michael (Meikel) Church.
Running from Sept. 15 to Dec. 4, 2025, the exhibit delves into the complexities of masculinity and grief through surreal Americana scenes created from found printed materials.
An opening reception for Hospital Walls, is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1, 5-6:30 p.m. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Church, a self-taught artist based in North Little Rock, is known for his masterful use of ephemera, layering old books, magazines, and other nostalgic papers to construct captivating new realities.
Church's work is deeply autobiographical. He describes his art as a means of examining what it truly means to grow up "alone and invisible" in the South. Through his intricate collages, he creates spaces for reflection, growth, and self-acceptance, transforming fragments of his own story into a coherent narrative. The goal of his work is to create thought-provoking imagery that not only communicates his personal journey but also encourages a broader discourse on the world and our place in it. Church's artistic evolution is on full display in Hospital Walls. The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see how the artist translates this deeply personal and spiritual inspiration into a visual narrative. Visitors are invited to contemplate the weight of the past, the journey of identity, and the threads that connect generations.
The Windgate Gallery, located in the UA - Pulaski Tech Center for Humanities and Arts at 3000 West Scenic Drive, is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Admission is free. For additional information, visit uaptc.edu/charts/windgate-gallery.
