About the Exhibit
Fighting for the Right to Fight: African American Experiences in WWII is a multimedia exhibition highlighting the experiences and struggles of African Americans during the Second World War. In the years prior to World War II, African Americans were systematically denied many rights and liberties by laws and customs intended to keep them in positions of inferiority. Despite this treatment, thousands of African Americans rushed to enlist in the armed forces at the start of the war, intent on serving their country. This multi-media exhibit features artifacts, photographs, and oral histories that highlight some of the extraordinary achievements and challenges of African Americans during World War II, both overseas and on the home front. The exhibit is presented by the National WWII Museum in New Orleans and sponsored by Abbot Downing and Wells Fargo. More information is available at righttofightexhibit.org.
