UA-PTC offers numerous faculty development opportunities throughout the year, using a variety of methods to provide access to every faculty member. The Professional Development Institute (PDI) offers faculty-focused seminars, webinars, workshops, and other presentations, many of which are led by faculty members. Online opportunities range from multi-week or multi-semester courses to self-paced modules that may be completed at any time. PDI also offers funding for conferences and training that is more discipline specific.
ACUE Course on Effective Teaching Practices
UA-PTC faculty have been participating in the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) Course on effective Teaching Practices.
“Through Quality Matters-certified learning design, faculty work together online and receive guidance from expert facilitators. Planning guides and demonstration videos present evidence-based approaches for all of the competencies in ACUE’s Effective Practice Framework©. These comprehensive courses lead to ACUE’s Certificate in Effective College Instruction, endorsed by the American Council on Education.” – ACUE website
Digital Instructor Program
Digital Instructor is a new program developed for faculty who teach online or who use a learning management system, like Blackboard, to supplement their courses. The program consists of three levels, starting with the basics of online learning and moving to more advanced tools and topics covered in the second and third levels. Each level must be completed in order, but faculty may participate in two levels at the same time. (More information on the Digital Instructor Program)
Faculty Development Resources
This site provides links and resources focused on teaching and learning.
Resources found here are those that have been requested by faculty or
administration. There is also a Staff Development Resources site that focuses on
training that overlaps both staff and faculty development, such as soft skills
or how to use software applications. (See the Faculty Development Resources site for more information.)
New Faculty Academy
UA-PTC recognizes that new faculty need additional support and training. The New Faculty Academy was developed to help bridge the move to teaching at the College. This year-round program covers a range of topics, from course design to teaching strategies.
Online Faculty Development
In an effort to reach those instructors whose schedules conflict with face-to-face training, PDI offers online access to faculty development. Some programs are multi-week or multi-semester, like ACUE or the Digital Instructor Level 1 course, while others offer more flexibility and provide faculty with training on-demand. (See the Online Professional Development page for more information.)
During the week before spring and fall semesters, before classes start, a full-week of professional development is offered. Because of timing, this is a great time to offer faculty development. Most of this training is faculty led or faculty driven, and is offered in a variety of formats. (See more information on upcoming PD Weeks or submit a proposal to present.)
