*** OFF-CAMPUS JOB POSTINGS DISCLAIMER AND SCAM INFORMATION ***

Regarding off-campus jobs posted through UA-PTC LibGuides (LibApps):

  • ONLY Federal Work Study employment opportunities are under the jurisdiction of UA-PTC - the college makes no recommendations or guarantees about positions/employers and assumes no liability or obligation for verification of job standards, continued employment, or affirmative action procedures related to NON-Work Study employment.
  • Due to the volume of jobs received for student employment, we are unable to research the integrity of every position listed.

Follow the guidelines below when dealing with potential scams:

  1. If you received an e-mail from UA-PTC administration, faculty, or staff using a third-party e-mail account outside of the UA-PTC network, please DO NOT click any links inside the e-mail and DO NOT respond back to the e-mail. JUST DELETE IT. This also applies to any suspicious e-mails received that you were not expecting.
  2. You can also report it directly to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at https://www.ic3.gov/Home/FileComplaint.

Helpful Tips for Avoiding Employment Scams:

NEVER:

  • NEVER pay for employment opportunities or wire funds to an employer.  Any employer who requests wire funds is a scam.
  • NEVER take cashier's checks or money orders as a form of payment, as your bank will hold you accountable for any bounced checks.
  • NEVER apply for a job listed by someone from another country or someone who indicates they are away on business or out of the country and need someone to begin right away.
  • NEVER agree to a background check unless you have met employer in person, and do not provide your personal information, including banking information over e-mail or phone.
  • NEVER apply to a position that is emailed to you unsolicited or has poorly-crafted writing with misspellings and bad grammar.
  • NEVER apply for an employer whose language is urgent, alarming, or threatening, is making strange or abrupt business requests, or whose sending email address doesn't match the company's it is coming from.

ALWAYS:

  • Be aware of potential job posting scams and use extreme caution in applying for off-campus positions.
  • Do use common sense and caution when applying for positions, especially when applying for positions off-campus.
  • Research the employer. Check their website and call the number listed on their website – do not call the number in the posting. Scammers will often use a legitimate business with fake numbers and email addresses as a cover, so don't be afraid to contact the business and inquire about the posting. You can also verify through third party organizations like the Better Business Bureau.
  • Meet face to face with potential employers. Be sure to choose a public place for your meeting, tell someone where you are going, and bring your cell phone with you just in case.
  • Be skeptical. If a job offers a lot of money for very little work, it is likely a scam. If a job seems too good to be true, it probably is.

What To Do If You Believe You've Been Scammed:

  1. Stop all contact with the scammer immediately.
  2. Contact UA-PTC Police & Public Safety director, Mark Stafford immediately at mstafford@uaptc.edu and provide him with all correspondence.
  3. If the scam happened via an e-mail you received, ensure that the e-mail address who contacted you is blocked.
  4. If you found the position on the UA-PTC LibGuides (LibApps) Student Job Board, please send an e-mail to cservices@uaptc.edu with the job posting, employer name, and a description of the scam so that the position can be removed.
