Faculty and staff in the ECD department are committed to supporting students in their growth both professionally and personally. Our goal is to provide central Arkansas with early childhood professionals who are trained in “best practice” and understand the ethical responsibilities of working with children and families.
Department Chair of Education and Reading
Mrs. Chism has been a full-time member of the Education Faculty since 2018. She has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Counseling from Ouachita Baptist University. A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Education. Her Master of Education (MEd) degree is in Reading from the University of Arkansas Little Rock. Mrs. Chism works in the Education and Reading Department teaching classes like Introduction to Education and Foundations of Literacy.
Physical Education Instructor
Mrs. Cowley has been a full-time member of the Education Faculty since 2016. She has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Kinesiology as well as a Master of Education (MEd) - emphasis in Secondary Education and Kinesiology - from Harding University. Mrs. Cowley teaches all classes related to physical education in the Education Department. Her classes include: Lifetime Fitness, Teaching Physical Education, Walking, Strength Training, Stretching, Recreational Games and Zumba. She also teaches College Seminar and Composition Fundamentals in the Academic Success Department on an as need basis.
Mrs. Hicks has been a full-time member of the Education Faculty since 2014. She received a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Child Development and a Master of Science in Education (MSE) in Child Development from Harding University. She also has a Juris Doctor (JD) from the UA-Bowen Law School. Mrs. Hicks teaches Child Growth and Development, Environments for Young Children, Math and Science in Early Childhood, Special Needs, Advanced Field Experience and Practicum. She also serves as the Field Supervisor for education students completing their field experience hours.
Early Childhood Development Instructor
Mrs. Johnston has been a full-time member of the Education Faculty since 2008. She has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Child Development from Harding University. Her Master of Science (MS) degree is in Human Environmental Sciences with an emphasis area in Early Childhood Education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Mrs. Johnston works in the Early Childhood Education and the Education Department teaching classes like Child Growth and Development, Foundations of Early Childhood Education, Health, Safety & Nutrition, Child Guidance, Working with Diverse Families, Development and Learning Theory and Children’s Literature. Mrs. Johnston is the lead faculty member for the programs National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation.
Foundations of Literacy
Mrs. Pierce has been a full-time instructor at UA-PTC since 2006. She joined the Education and Reading Department in the fall of 2018. She has a Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) in Elementary Education and a Master of Science in Education (MSE) with emphasis in Reading from the University of Central Arkansas. Mrs. Pierce teaches Foundations of Literacy.
